From 8-12 September PolMig’s PhD student Sophia Stille participated in the summer school of the Centre for African Studies (ZASB) at the University of Basel, Switzerland. The theme „Honoring Mudimbe: Rethinking Research through African Thought“ brought together seven PhD students from African and European universities to reflect on Valentin-Yves Mudimbe’s legacy and what it means for researchers in African Studies today. Participants were challenged to rethink the concepts they employ in their PhD research through the lens of Mudimbe’s colonial library, analysing whether a concept is “colonially contaminated” and considering the implications for their projects.  These questions started insightful debates, especially as participants shared diverse experiences and reflected on their positionalities. The second part of the program focused on academic writing where participants were guided in writing a book review and giving peer-feedback. Attending the summer school was an enriching experience that offered opportunities for important discussions and for building connections with fellow researchers and colleagues.

Thanks to the ZASB Team for their hospitality and support!
